Year 4 – Lessons from Our Real Estate Journey

,

It has been over a year since we went to our first real estate seminar and kick started our journey in education in Real Estate. We’ve realized one thing – there is no “THE” way – there is only YOUR way.

If you know me or Alex personally, we are not ones to turn down a challenge. For others in our age group, their starting families, buying new cars, bigger houses and or just living life. Our weekends are packed with trips to Home Depot, the next project, the next project, then going back to Home Depot… oh and did I mention the next project? But something that has been on our mind and should be at the forefront of every investors mind is having the end goal but not being rigid or have tunnel vision to getting to that goal.

The problem is for us “Gen-Z, Millennial’s” the mindset is that go-go-go mentality and we all want that instant gratification. As I reflect on the conversations that I have had with wealthy real estate investors, there seems to be 2 common themes:

  1. Only you know your threshold for risk and reward; start with asking questions, staying curious, practicing getting in front of buyers and sellers consistently.
  2. Finding YOUR balance between work and play.

For us currently, it isn’t to necessarily escape the rat race (bc that is a given), it’s to build slow and steady growth that surpasses the changes that come with life. Because at the end of the day it is not about how much money you have in the bank, it’s not about who is the youngest millionaire or who was able to scale the fastest. It’s about who is able to stay in the game for the long haul, it’s about changing WITH the ebbs and flows of the real estate market. It’s about the relationships that grow along the way, the support, the help you are able to provide, and the memories you make along the way.

Everyone get’s tunnel vision, and while the goal is most certainly the object to attain for – what about the rest of the time? Who said happiness is on a time table only to be enjoyed AFTER the fruits of your labor? Many investors get so caught up in the acquisition, scaling and don’t get me wrong – making TONS of money – and yes achieving FINANCIAL FREEDOM.

But sometimes, it is at what cost? The cost of less TIME with or doing x, y, z. Whether that is family, friends, or hobbies – time is the only currency we can’t get back. For us, finding that balance is between making smarter, sound and informed deals while pursuing our other goals of travel as well. We will never be as young as we are now, and while sacrificing a decade to get ahead may have sounded very appealing to us 4 years ago, you never know what is around the corner to stir the pot. Don’t let comparison steal joy out of living life. Remain grateful for the opportunity, find YOUR balance, seek education, keep making offers, seize those opportunities and enjoy the journey as it comes.

Catch ya’ll later!
